Our practice has been dedicated to bright, active, life-long learning institutions for 35 years. We design healthy educational environments for students, teachers and communities.
We believe education is the cornerstone of our communities and of our world. Therefore, places for child and teen learning should be designed to promote wellness, equity, inquiry, and creative expression of a developing worldview in light of what they are learning.
Our school clients rely on us for full-spectrum services, from system-wide feasibility studies to school planning and construction. We understand current trends in educational curriculum and the evolving requirements of specialized learning. This expertise is reflected in many completed new and renovated academic facilities for both public and private schools. Our designs are unified around the goal of creating carefully scaled and engaging learning environments flexible enough to support both group and individual learning.
Current thinking around classroom planning and furnishing encourages concepts like rapid multi-modality between group-based and individualized learning, decentralized teaching stations and multiple writeable surfaces. Many of these concepts plan around how students actually learn and what facilitates effective teaching, which release buildings from antiquated complacencies that may actually hinder active learning. A school’s pedagogical process evolution into 21st century learning principals must be planned to be supported by its staff and students. Tappé has found that through an engaged process with teachers, department heads and other users, simple changes to classroom concepts have led to more engaged learning environments.
