From libraries and cultural centers to educational and community-focused spaces, our work is rooted in the belief that every project is an opportunity to reflect a community’s values, honor its history, and inspire its future.
Our Story
Tappé Architects, Inc. was founded in 1979 as a continuation of the firm of Huygens and Tappé, originally begun in 1962. Our practice has been credited with more than 250 institutional and municipal projects, along with a wide range of private institutional, residential, and commercial commissions.
Founding principal Tony Tappé guided the firm for over three decades before the organization transitioned to new leadership in 2000. Before establishing the practice, Tony worked at Walter Gropius’s renowned firm, The Architects Collaborative (TAC), in Cambridge, MA.
Tony was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) in 1979 and served as President of the Boston Society of Architects (BSA). He also served on the Board of Directors for the Boston Architectural College (BAC), chaired its Continuing Education Committee, and was a visiting architect at the American Academy in Rome in 1997.
Our Approach
We approach every project as a collaborative process—one that blends research, listening, and creativity to achieve meaningful design solutions. Whether a new public library, a community center, or a place of learning, we aim to create architecture that responds to its context, enhances the human experience, and strengthens the bonds of community.
Our belief in learning by design extends beyond the walls of our projects. It’s reflected in our commitment to sustainable design, innovative technologies, and equitable spaces that serve people of all ages and backgrounds.
